Benchmarking and Innovation
Do you proactively challenge your organizational strengths? That’s right, “strengths”.
If you don’t, we recommend that you do. Or else, competitors will reduce your strengths to common commodities. Abruptly.
Sustainable organization’s, amongst other things, benchmark their own star practices across industries. They then innovate the best-of-the-best star practices for their own organization. With breakthrough results.
I am pleased to inform you that benchmarking help is now at your doorstep. BestPrax Club is the associate of APQC for the Asia-Pacific region. As you are aware, APQC is the Mecca for benchmarking, with a track record in excess of 30 years. Hence, we can now feed you managerial practices of noteworthy organizations, from across the world.
But how do you innovate? We recommend organizing creativity labs to tap the most under-utilized asset of your organization – the right-brain of managers!
BestPrax Club welcomes you to become a member for access to our vast knowledge base, and also to avail of our creativity lab services. The results can be startling.
And oh yes, you may also correct your weaknesses similarly, and leap frog into the future.

Brainwriting at Ashok Piramal Group
The Ashok Piramal Group held its ‘Annual Communication Meet’ on 21st April 2008 at ITC Grand Central. This meet comprised of senior level managers from the seven companies belonging to the Group.
During the first half, each of the seven company heads presented their progress in the past year. All presentations ended with strategic challenges currently encountered by their respective organizations.
BestPrax Club facilitated the second half of this meet by introducing Brainwriting to the hundred odd senior managers. The managers were divided into 15 groups, each having seven members. The Brainwriting tool had members in each group build on one another’s ideas for creative solutions to their specific strategic challenge. Silently.
At the end of this exercise, each group had generated more than 100 ideas to solutions. Of these, the five most feasible solutions were presented.
Mrs Urvi Piramal, Chairperson of Ashok Piramal Group felicitated the most creative solution from those presented.

Co-Promoting Innovation
BestPrax Club has partnered with Qimpro Consultants to grow the subject of innovation in India. The initial results have been encouraging. In particular with respect to an annual competition hosted by Qimpro on improvement and innovation. The competition is open to industry and academia. The finals of the competition will be held under the banner Qimpro Convention; in August 2008.
Beyond the competition, BestPrax Club and Qimpro are reaching out to engineering and management students, to adopt topics on innovation, for their submission projects. Also, we propose evangelising “managing for innovation” in terms of the Baldrige criteria – in industry, education and healthcare.
The partnering has an ambitious agenda.
What quality is to Japan, innovation must be to India.

Cross-Industry Benchmarking
Early in the 20th Century European generals were trying to find out the best way to move soldiers, horses, and equipment from one place to another. They recognized that a circus faces similar transportation problems on an ongoing basis.
PT Barnum's circus successfully transported personnel, equipment and animals from one US town to another. These European generals studied what made Barnum's circus transportation so smooth and efficient. They then adopted and applied these same "best practices" to improve their own armies' transportation.
